Acer Philippines to hold Windows 8 launch event at Crown Plaza Hotel at 11AM

October 23rd, 2012 — 9:34am

Acer-Windows-8-devices
In a couple of hours, Acer will officially unveil its latest Windows-powered laptops and tablet computers with Microsoft’s upcoming Windows 8 operating system. Microsoft itself isn’t set to launch Windows 8 officially until later this week, which means that we here in the Philippines get first dibs on some of Acer’s newest devices. As the official press invite for today’s event states, “The new generation of gr8 [sic] computing is about to begin.” My guess is the touchscreen all-in-one slash tablet computer hybrids that were first showcased at Computex 2012 will be what’s in store for attendees later. Watch out for a more detailed post about the launch event and all of the devices that are going to be part of it posted here later.

Windows 8 to drive increase in notebook shipments to Acer, Asus, HP and others

October 1st, 2012 — 6:18pm

Acer Aspire S7 Ultrabook with Windows 8
While the market may seem loathe to embrace Windows 8-powered laptops–mainly because most anything can be done with nothing more than a tablet or a smartphone nowadays–ODMs from Taiwan are actually seeing an increase in notebook shipments to the likes of Acer, Asus, Lenovo, and HP. As the Chinese DigiTimes reports, HP, Asus, and Acer are expected to see increases in notebook shipments by 70%, 50%, and 30%, respectively. It is said that Microsoft’s upcoming Windows 8 launch is the driving force behind this sequential growth. However, a separate report on the Taipei Times says that overall notebook orders will remain weak through Q4 2012 based on a recent survey conducted by Deutsche Bank, where it was shown that it will take time for consumers to warm up to new Windows 8 devices. Further, the report cites a Taipei-based Deutsche Bank analyst named Ivy Lee in saying that Acer’s sales will decline 2% sequentially due to a product transition period while sales of Asus and Lenovo will increase from Q2 by 12% and 8%, respectively.
